FAQ Sion

Factsheet Sion

What is the Sion?
The sion is a self-charging electric car. Integrated photovoltaic panels in the body are charging the traction battery during the day. The specially developed system called “viSono” is unique and the first of it’s kind. The roof, bonnet, rear and the complete bodywork at the sides consist of highly efficient mono crystalline silicon cells, which are covered by an layer of polycarbonate. The electrically powered compact van with five doors and a length of 4.10 m is equipped with family-friendly six seats (3 + 3). A 50kW motor allows a one-speed transmission speed of up to 140 km / h. An optional trailer coupling permits a tensile load of 1300 kg.
Additional Details for the viSono system: The lightweight polycarbonate has the advantage of being unbreakable and especially resistant to weathering. With an area of 7,5m² enough electricity is generated, to last for an additional 30 free kilometers in one day.
For clarification: The average number of kilometers of a car is 22 km per day.

Pricing
Depending on the demand, there are two variations of the SION concerning the range. The design and basic equipment remain the same for both variants.
• “Extender” 250km range (30kWh) Targeted Price: 16.000 €
• “Urban” 120km range (14,4KWh) Targeted Price: 12.000 €
The vehicle chassis is built modular, so that both equipment versions can be manufactured on one production line.

Optionally, the Sion is offered with a monthly battery hire or a single battery purchase. Prices for this are yet to be announced. Please understand that we are still at an early stage and therefore can’t give you precise details. The current rate of declining battery prices will however most likely result in a favorable end cost.

Extender
The range of the vehicle trim level “Extender” of 250 km is achieved by a 30 kWh battery. The integrated charger allows one to charge batteries with power between 3,7 and 22 kW AC and 50 kW DC. With a charging power of 50 kW, the batteries can be charged up to 80% in 30 minutes. It is also possible to charge with any average household plug.

Urban
The Urban is perfect for big cities. The range of 74 mi is sufficient for the usual city driving and commuting. The low purchase price makes the Urban interesting for delivery or courier services. The Urban reaches about 74 mi and can be charged up to 80% by different charging power up to 22 kW AC within 30 minutes. If you are commuting less than 30 mi (one way), then the urban is the environmentally friendly alternative for you.

reSono
A maintenance system called “reSono” guarantees favorable maintenance costs due to inexpensive spare parts. All components of the vehicle can be reordered with a simple mouse click on sonomotors.com. So we want to maximize the service life of the product.
At reSono an instruction catalog and a tutorial video will be provided, intended to guarantee that you can install spare parts into the vehicle without major automotive knowledge, by yourself. Only the (partial) guarantee will be invalidated here.
But that does not mean you have to repair the SION on your own.
The royalty free disclosure of the workshop manual is to enable brand independent Car repair shops all over the world to repair the model SION. This results in a very well developed service network from the very beginning, which guarantees you a cost-effective repair of the vehicle.
Short: You can just go to the repair shop around the corner with your SION.

Display
A central, ten inch display allows you to connect your smartphone via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and to have all your apps, your music and your contacts immediately at hand. No complicated operating system, just the familiar interface of your smartphone. How much time have you wasted, trying to understand the strange operating system of your car?! And how often was not even one update offered for this operating system afterward?!

breSono
The breSono system is a unique moss integrated into the dashboard and is used as a natural air filter. A special lichen (moss) is used, which is known for its appealing look and excellent air filtration. In spite of the naturalness of the moss, it actually requires no care, since this plant draws its water from the air. So breSono regulates humidity in the interior of SION all by itself. In short, it’s a natural air conditioner.
But it has other advantages: The microstructures of moss binds fine dust particles from the air, so even in a big city you can breathe fresh air. The moss also has sound-absorbing properties, so you have a smooth ride. Moreover it also acts fire repellent and is thus assigned to the fire protection class B1.

How long is the service life of Sion? How long is the warranty?
Two-year warranty or up to 150,000 kilometers is the aimed warranty on the entire vehicle. However, we estimate the life of the Sion at 10-15 years – dependent on what conditions the Sion is driven under and how it is maintained. Rust is often a big problem in our latitudes. Generally, a long service life of the vehicle is for the SONO MOTORS GmbH of high importance, since only so, a real sustainability can be achieved. We have therefore developed the reSono system, with which you can repair the Sion via video instruction yourself or bring the Sion in any thee workshop without it must belong to our service network. This is because we provide a freely available Workshop manual online that anyone can download for free. Here you can find all the details for the correct repair of any kind. We also provide to each component of the vehicle the CAD file for free online, so as to leave the clients to allow spare parts produced locally by CNC milling or 3D printer. This also means that companies can manufacture and distribute spare parts for Sion without a license from the SONO MOTORS GmbH. This has the result that parts manufactured for the Sion in the mass and will always be available and the customer will benefit from the low prices of spare parts.
The only drawback is that at the non-commercial repairs and external corporate produced spare parts, the (partial) warranty expires. But this is also the case with all conventional vehicles. We can not give a guarantee if a part has been replaced by you none professionally.
What distinguishes the Sion from other electric cars?
viSono – Integrated solar cells charge the battery of the Sion and allow additional 30km range per day.
Practicality – six seats, each individually folded down. Big trunk. Optional trailer coupling.
Low price – The main use of aftermarket products and minimally held basic equipment.
reSono – The maintenance system ensures convenient maintenance costs due to inexpensive spare parts. By revealing a workshop manual, a developed service network is created from the beginning.

FAQ Crowdfunding

What is crowdfunding and how does it work
Crowdfunding is a relatively new way for start-ups to get capital to implement their concept. We opted for the crowdfunding, as it allows us to remain independent. Other forms of financial support such as business angels, venture capital or even the IPO are indeed equally popular financing strategies, hereby, however, the company’s shares are always splitt. Thereby the founders lose independence and often give up their original ideals for economic reasons.
We, the SONO MOTORS GmbH, have this primary goal of protecting the environment and to no longer burn oil as soon as possible for our transportation. To achieve this, we need your help. Only with you, we can act independently and reach this goal.
That is why we have launched a crowdfunding campaign. Now everyone can preorder the Sion for 100 € on our crowdfunding page. Besides the € 100 there are also lower contribution amounts such as € 5 or 15 €.
How exactly does the preorder of the Sion work?

FAQ viSono

What is the viSono system?
The viSono System is a groundbreaking new development in which solar cells are integrated into the body of the vehicle. This enables the Sion to go without recharging for several days (complete autarky).
With the integrated bidirectional charging system, all common electronic devices can be charged with the energy stored in the Sion – with a simple household plug.
Technical details of the viSono system?

The lightweight polycarbonate has the advantage of being unbreakable and especially resistant to weathering. With a surface area of 7.5 m², enough electricity for an additional 30 free kilometers is generated in one day.
The modules are glued to the substructure and thus are interchangeable, just like a windshield. The choice of materials is of great importance because many requirements must be met – longevity (minimum of 8 years), breaking strength, environmental resistance and light weight.
Monocrystalline silicon cells are usually laminated between a 2-5 mm thick glass. However, the use of glass has a negative effect on weight (26,490 N/m3) and fracture resistance, which is vital in the automotive sector. Therefore, the use of polycarbonate (PC) is an advantage: It’s lighter, much more impact resistant and has a transparency index of .86 (glass .8-.9). The combination with transparent thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) enhances these properties even further, which results in the manufacturing of light, chemical- and UV-resistant composite safety glazing. Furthermore, at a moderate collision energy, there is no danger of splintering with PC.
This special safety glass is also used in aircraft construction, architecture and aeronautics.
In the automotive industry, polycarbonate is being used for headlights.
A total of 349 SunPower cells are producing 1,144 Watts peak at an efficiency of 22%. This amount could provide power for up to 65 km in one day. However, this is a theoretical maximum value which is highly unlikely to be achieved under real-life circumstances.
So why do we say 30km?
Through testing and accurate calculation we found that under optimum conditions (8 full hours of sun), up to 50 km are possible. But we want to provide honest and practical information. Therefore, we state a realistic average of 30 km of additional range through the viSono system.

Is the viSono system useful?

Doesn’t it make more sense to install photovoltaic modules on the roof of a house or car port and then charge the vehicle through the storage battery overnight?
Yes and no. On one hand, rooftop photovoltaic modules are very useful, because they are precisely aligned towards the sun and therefore, have a very good annual yield. Nevertheless, an additional storage battery is necessary, if the energy is not to be fed into the public grid. An in-house PV system is also not something just anyone can afford, usually only high-income homeowners. That’s what we want to change with the Sion. Everyone should have access to sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation.
Furthermore, the necessary conversion of DC – provided by the solar cells installed on the roof – to AC (power grid) and the subsequent repeated conversion to direct current for the battery of the electric vehicle is very inefficient. However, a combination of both – the in-house PV system and the viSono system – would generally be desirable.
The self-recharging capabilities of the vehicle also provide a certain amount of carefreeness: Without them, the vehicle owner would have to think about the range – the viSono system thus eliminates range anxiety. During the summer months, for a short commute of less than 15 km, it’s even possible for the vehicle to be completely self-sustaining.

What does 'bidirectional charging' mean?

‘Bidirectional charging’ means that the Sion is not only charged with electricity, but also can, at any time, provide electricity – it’s a mobile power storage. Using a household plug, all common electronic devices with up to 2,000 Watts can be powered by the Sion. If you’re out camping, the vehicle will power your hotplate; if you’re at a construction site, the angle grinder; or, in disaster control situations, the Sion will help by providing emergency power supply. This means conventional generators are replaced and therefore has a particularly positive effect on the environment. Of course, the Sion recharges throughout these situations thanks to the viSono system.

How long does the viSono system last?
The service life of conventional solar cells is 15-20 years – clearly longer than the average lifespan of a vehicle. For the viSono system, we currently cannot give any more information than that we aim for a 5-year warranty. In case modules have to be replaced (e.g. after an accident), there will be no huge cost. In addition, polycarbonate is very scratch-resistant and unbreakable. For a large scratch, we estimate the repair costs to be about the same as they would be for a conventional car.
What care does the viSono system need?
The viSono system basically requires the same care as a conventional car with paint. When washing the car, make sure you’re using a mild, non-corrosive cleaner.
What effect has the viSono system to the range of the Sion?

With a surface area of 7.5 m², enough electricity for an additional 30 free kilometers is generated in one day.

How efficient are the solar cells of the viSono system?
For the viSono system, we use highly efficient SunPower cells with an efficiency of 22%. These have the advantage of being particularly resistant to breakage and even in the event of breakage, they don’t lose their functionality. Furthermore, these cells require no visible conductive traces which affect the design of the vehicle.
What effect does viSono have on the overall carbon footprint of the vehicle?

We’re aware the production of silicon cells is very energy-consuming. It’s difficult to give precise specifications, but the average amortisation period for the energy invested in the production of solar cells is about two years. This means that only after this period of time, the viSono system has generated as much power as was previously required for its production. When compared to a conventional vehicle chassis (metal sheets, plastic), the conventional chassis has a better value during production while the viSono system catches up after a short time. Because of the aforementioned two years, the viSono system is ultimately a CO2-positive product while all conventional bodies still retain their negative CO2 balance. Factoring in the entire lifespan of a vehicle, the viSono system allows for a ‘real’ 0 g/CO2

That is to say, that only as much energy is generated by the viSono system, as it was previously required for the production. When comparing the CO2 balance of a conventional vehicle body (metal sheet, plastic) with the viSono system, it is in the production much better, but after a short time on a par with that of the viSono system. Because after the aforementioned 2 years, the viSono system is a CO2-positive product while all conventional bodies still retain their negative CO2 balance. After a car life, the viSono system therefore has a very positive effect on the overall CO2 balance of the vehicle and allows a true value of 0 g CO2 per kilometre.

How does viSono behave in case of an accident?
The use of polycarbonate (PC) has many advantages: It is lighter, considerably more impact resistant than glass and has a transparency index of .86 (glass .8-.9). Furthermore, at a moderate collision energy, there is no danger of splintering, which makes PC an excellent choice in regard to the important Head Impact Criterium (HIC) according to DIN 52310. It also falls below the HIC threshold of <1000 required by ECE 43 (directive for vehicle glazing).
How does the viSono system behave in case of fire?
The most important component of the viSono system are polycarbonate sheets. This material is certified for fire protection class B1 – flame resistant (burning dripping).
Will the viSono system be sustainable and environmentally friendly produced?
Our photovoltaic modules are produced using renewable energy from a solar system at the production site.
Do I have to always park the Sion in the sun?
No, of course not. The Sion is indeed a normal electric car with a range of 250km. In addition, the viSono system charges the battery with the integrated solar cells powered by the sun, and this up to 30 km per day. Even if you park in the shade or if it’s cloudy, the viSono system charges the Sion. This happens due to diffuse radiation of the sun, as such radiation is reflected from the walls of buildings or other bright surfaces. Of course, the charging effect won’t be as strong as in direct sunlight.
Can the Sion drive at night?
You can also drive at night as the Sion is still also a normal electric car with a range of 250 km. In addition, the viSono system charges the battery with the integrated solar cells powered by the sun, which gives you up to an additional 30 km per day.

FAQ reSono

What is reSono?

reSono is a maintenance system for the electric vehicle Sion, which guarantees favorable maintenance costs due to inexpensive spare parts. All components of the vehicle can be reordered with a simple mouse click. So we want to maximize the service life of the product.
We were inspired by the mobile phone manufacturer Fairphone which has been offering this service successfully for several years (we also have one). At reSono an instruction catalog and a tutorial video will be provided, intended to guarantee that you can install spare parts into the vehicle without major automotive knowledge, by yourself.
If you do not dare to do this, you can just go to brand independent car repair shops, where you can let your Sion be repaired. Because we don’t give away repair shop licenses at exorbitant prices, or develop software that only we can decode. No, our workshop manual is free for everyone on our website. Whether a private individual or a trader.
This results in a very well developed service network from the very beginning, which guarantees you a cost-effective repair of the vehicle.
Short: You can just go to the repair shop around the corner with your Sion.

How does the reSono function?

Generally, a long service life of the vehicle is of high importance for the SONO MOTORS GmbH, since real sustainability can only be achieved this way. We have therefore developed the reSono system, with which you can repair the Sion via video instruction yourself or bring the Sion to any workshop without it having to belong to our service network. This is because we provide a freely available Workshop manual online, that anyone can download for free. Here you can find all the details for the correct repair of any kind. We also provide to each component of the vehicle the CAD file for free online, so as to let clients to have spare parts produced locally by CNC milling or 3D printer. This also means that companies can manufacture and distribute spare parts for Sion without a license from the SONO MOTORS GmbH. This has the result that plenty parts will be manufactured for the Sion and will always be available and the customer will benefit from the low prices of spare parts.
The only drawback is that with non-commercial repairs and external corporate produced spare parts, the (partial) warranty expires. But this is also the case with all conventional vehicles. We can not give a guarantee if a part has been replaced by you none professionally.

Where and when can I buy spare parts for Sion?
Once the vehicle has been produced and delivered, there will be a tab called reSono on our website. Here you can then reorder all parts of the vehicle. For some parts options are displayed, where you could get the concerned spare part somewhere else. For example, in the case of conventional screws. This shows you, whether you can buy it simply in your local hardware store. This saves waiting time and costs.
Why the reSono system exist?

We were tired of not even being able to replace a light bulb on conventional vehicles. We wanted to finally have a vehicle that you can repair yourself. A vehicle that can not only be repaired in the vendor-specific workshop at exorbitant prices.
Therefore, we have decided to make the Sion repairable for everyone. Everyone should be able to repair the vehicle independently and free with Step-by-step instructions (and video tutorials), which are free to download on our website. And if you have no desire to repair your vehicle yourself, just bring it to the nearest garage. Here, the special thing about it is, that this workshop does not have to be related to our service network and doesn’t need a license from us. This is exactly what we want, to guarantee you right from the start: A worldwide service network. Everywhere. Without exception. And we achieve this with the publication of the workshop manual.

Why we are doing this? We want the Sion to have as long a life as possible. Only then we can achieve real sustainability. However, we achieve this only through a well-developed service network, which allows, in case of damage, a low cost repair and maintenance of the Sion.

How much is reSono?

The reSono is free and publically open for everyone. So you can view and download the workshop manual, software updates, CAD data and instructional videos on our website. And all for free. The spare parts can be royalty free reproduced by companies. Therefore, you will only pay for the cost of the replacement part and for the repair, but not for exclusive licensing rights.

Does the reSono system make sense?
Generally we want to turn our backs to the throwaway society and make products solid and durable again. However, a long service life also implies that the product is easy and inexpensive to repair. Therefore reSono is a very important contribution to the sustainability of the product. We also provide to each component of the vehicle the CAD file for free online, as to enable the customer to manufacture spare parts locally by CNC milling or 3D printer. But this also means that spare parts can be manufactured and sold by companies without a license from the SONO MOTORS GmbH for Sion. This has the result that spares for the Sion will be well presented in the open market and the customer will benefit from the low prices of spare parts.

FAQ breSono

What is breSono?

breSono is a natural air filter which has positive climatic characteristics that improve indoor air quality. Here, a unique Iceland moss is integrated into the dashboard. With activated ventilation, the intake of outside air passes through the moss and is thereby cleaned. The Iceland moss (biological name: cladonia rangiferina) has a detectably positive effect on the air quality, since the microstructures of moss bind fine particulate matter. However, it is expressly understood that the breSono system can not be compared to an artificial filter; however, the Sion additionally features one too.

How long does breSono last? Can it go mouldy?

The moss integrated in the breSono system is very durable. We tested the moss over several years without any noticeable change. It has a high colour consistency and therefore keeps its exclusive natural look over many years. In a special dyeing process, the microstructures which take water out of the air and release it when needed, are preserved, along with the other natural functions of the moss. In addition, this process protects the moss from staining from environmental influences, such as mould and pests.

What care does the breSono system need? Do I have to water it?
The breSono system requires no care. Watering, fertilising, trimming or exposure to natural light are not necessary because the Iceland moss has no enzymatic reaction in this state. Even during summers with hot weather it doesn’t need any maintenance.
What are the effects of the breSono system to fine dust in the air?

Iceland moss (biological name: Cladonia rangiferina) has a documented positive effect on the particulate matter in the air. The microstructures of the moss bind fine dust particles from the air by electrostatic attraction. Thanks to these microstructures, the moss has a large surface area which is electrically charged negatively. Particulate matter is, in general, charged positively. Through opposite charge, the fine dust is attracted and attached.

What are the effects of breSono on the humidity?

breSono has the characteristic of a sponge and thus acts humidity-regulating. Humidity is either bound or released into the air depending on the level. At more than 50%, the moss binds humidity and becomes soft. At lower humidities, the moss releases the stored moisture and thereby becomes dry and somewhat harder. Both are natural states of the moss which do not alter its appearance.

What are the effects of breSono on acoustics?

breSono has an extremely positive effect on acoustics. The microstructures of the moss absorb sound, reducing the reflected sound throughout a room. breSono is therefore ideally suited for the interior of the Sion.

Which microbiological emission does breSono have?

breSono is no growth environment for microbes of all kinds. In addition, the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are at a very low level, which would make breSono suitable even for living rooms.

How does the breSono system react in case of a fire?

Iceland moss reacts, in case of fire, as any other materials pertaining to the fire protection class B1. After removing the source of the fire, the fire automatically extinguishes.

Will the Iceland moss be harvested sustainably and environmentally friendly?

Our Iceland moss comes from the European Arctic Circle and is only harvested from moss fields which fall outside the winter feeding grounds of reindeer. Additionally, the moss is harvested using traditional techniques guaranteeing rapid regrowth. We have not used other mosses such as boll or cushion moss with respect to the environment.

How is the moss of breSono colored?

The Iceland moss is dyed using a saline water solution with natural salt from the Dead Sea. The salt has a composition of 50.8% magnesium chloride, 14.4% calcium chloride, 30.4% sodium chloride and 4.4% potassium chloride, based on the anhydrous salts. For the colour we do not use heavy metals and glycerol for environmental reasons.
